Maryland mosques, Muslim organizations unite
in historic message of solidarity with black communities
June 4, 2020: 35 Muslim organizations and Mosques in Maryland participated in an online news conference announcing an unprecedented, historic message by Maryland mosques, Islamic institutions and Muslim organizations united in solidarity with Black communities following the murder of George Floyd, who was killed while in police custody on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minn.
In a statement, the Muslim groups and mosques said in part:
“As mosques, organizations, councils, MSA’s and other entities across the state of Maryland, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Floyd family, and to families of all backgrounds and faiths whose loved ones have been killed as a consequence of white supremacy and state-sanctioned violence – from policing, mass incarceration and criminal justice institutions, to health care and education systems.
“We believe that justice for Black communities is justice for all communities, and that justice for all people will come by and through an unwavering and unapologetic commitment to justice for Black people. We believe that this must include an honest acknowledgment of entrenched racism within our own circles of influence, and a renewed commitment to challenging and dismantling it.”
