Arab and Muslim American groups denounce killing of George Floyd

By Abdus Sattar Ghazali

The Arab and Muslim American groups have denounced the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 and expressed solidarity with the African-American community. Floyd's death, the latest in a line of killings of African-Americans by law enforcement officers in the US, has reawakened deep anger at generations of black people who have fallen victim to police brutality - and rekindled a centuries-long struggle for racial justice in America.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), in a statement strongly condemned the killing and said it believes that Black Lives Matter- and we will continue working with Black civil rights organizations and activists to fight against injustice and racism. As Arab-Americans, we must acknowledge that many of the rights we have today were fought for by Black Americans whose blood, sweat, and tears have gone into shaping this country.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) National Executive Director, Nihad Awad, in a message,  Said CAIR condemns all forms of anti-Black violence, whether the culprits are police officers like Derek Chauvin in Minnesota or rogue individuals like Gregory and Travis McMichael in Georgia. We also unequivocally condemn all other manifestations of anti-Black racism, whether seen in our government, our society or even our communities.

The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) expressed solidarity, love, and a commitment to the Black community, and Black families, whose loved ones have been murdered through state-sanctioned violence: from policing and criminal justice institutions, to health care and education systems.

The Muslim American Society (MAS) condemns in the strongest words possible the death of yet another unarmed Black man at the hands of police brutality….. While our communities, especially the Black community, are reeling and processing the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breanna Taylor, Sean Reed and countless others, we are faced with the tragedy of yet another life lost unnecessarily.

Muslim Public Affairs Council joined Intellect Love Mercy Foundation, ISLAH LA, LA Voice, Project Islamic Hope and Word of Encouragement Church issued a joint statement to condemn the murder of Georg Floyd.

The Islamic Circle of North America quoted the statement of the US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), to condemn the murder of George Floyd.

The US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), on behalf of our members and American Muslims, utterly condemn this blatant act of murder, and we call for the swift prosecution on 1st degree murder charges of its four perpetrators disguised as public servants in the uniforms and behind the badges of the Minneapolis Police Department.

35 Muslim organizations and Mosques in Maryland, on Monday June 4, participated in an online news conference announcing an unprecedented, historic message of solidarity with Black communities following the murder of George Floyd, who was killed while in police custody on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minn.
